It's easier to start making more sustainable lifestyle choices once you know where to find the resources. Here is a listing of the recycling centers in different Istanbul municipalities to help you be more 3G.

Recycling
in Istanbul
IICS would like to help its community become greener citizens. Here are some local contacts for you to help you with your recycling needs. All municipalities in Istanbul provide basically the same services for recycling needs. There may be some minor differences which are listed in these tabs. Also provided are telephone numbers and contact people can speak at least a little bit of English.
 
Besiktas
Municipality
The number to call is: (0212) 319 4242
Department: Çevre Koruma Müdürlüğü (Environmental Protection Management)
English speaking people in that department are Mr. Ali Asılsoy and Ms. Asuman Sofoğlu

 

The Beşiktaş Municipality will recycle your garbage, paper, plastic, glass, metal, old batteries, used frying oil, and old electronic equipment.

Paper, Plastic, and Metal
First call the municipality and ask for recycling bags or a carton garbage bin. You can place this bin at the entrance to your apartment building. In this bin you can put paper, plastic, and metal. When the bin is full, call the municipality again to inform them that your bin is ready for pick up. According to your street address, the municipality will inform you of the day and date of the pick up. After the first pick up, the recycle garbage truck will come on the same day for the following weeks.

Used Batteries
The municipality will collect your used batteries. All you have to do is call.

Used Cooking and Frying Oil
The municipality will collect used frying oil. The amount to be picked up should be a minimum of 3 litres. You can store the cooking oil in a plastic or glass bottle.

Used Electronic Goods
The municipality will collect your old and unused electronics equipment. All you have to do is call.

Glass
The municipality has a contract with a company called Özen Cam who will come to your house and pick up your glass. The telephone number is 212 668 5877 .The contact person's name is Ms. Eylem Öztürk, who speaks limited English. There are also containers located in places close to your home where you can deposit your recyclable goods yourself. These containers are usually next to major cross sections or in busy locations. You can deposit paper, plastic and metal into these containers. You can recognize them from the recycling logo on the containers. Glass recycling containers are colored white and green. There are around 140 of these containers in the Beşiktaş district. If you would like recycling bins in your work place, you can call the municipality and ask for carton bins and then set up a date for them to pick up once a week.

 
Sisli
Municipality

Şişli Municipality provides residents with bags and recycled carton bins to put paper, plastic, metal, and glass. First call the municipality and ask for recycling bags or a carton garbage bin. When the bin is full, call the municipality again to inform them that your bin is ready for pick up. According to your street address, the municipality will inform you of the day and date of the pick up. After the first pick up, the recycle garbage truck will come on the same day for the following weeks.  

Batteries and Cooking Oil
They will pick up upon your phone call the used batteries and old frying cooking oil.

Used Electronic Goods
Şişli municipality does NOT provide recycling for old/used electronic goods. There is an address where you can take the equipment in the Şişli district:

Electronic Recycled Gathering Center
Address: Halide Edip Adıvar Mah., Turkiye Hastanesi Girişi (Turkish Hospital Entrance)
At the entrance to the hospital you will see a big blue container where you can drop off your old electronic goods. You can also drop off used cartridges and florescent light bulbs.

 
Sariyer
Municipality
Department: Çevre Koruma Müdürlüğü (Environmental Protection Management)
The English speaking person's name is Mr. Suha Parlakçı, who speaks intermediate English.
Sarıyer Municipality also has the same services as Beşiktaş and Şişli. The difference in the Sarıyer Municipality is that they can also provide you with blue garbage bags. You will receive from them the blue garbage bag as well as the carton container bin.

Another difference in the Sariyer Municipality is that they do NOT want you to put glass into any of their blue plastic bags or the carton recycling bins which you keep at home or at work. The glass is picked up by another organization called Özen Cam who do pick ups every 2 weeks. They can also provide you special containers to keep the glass in if needed. The telephone number for Özen Cam is (212) 668 5877. The English speaking person's name is Ms. Eylem Öztürk.  

Batteries and Cooking Oil
The municipality will collect used frying oil and old batteries. All you have to do is call.

Used Electronic Goods
The Sarıyer Municipality will collect your used and broken electronic equipment.

 
Kadikoy
Municipality
Department: Waste Coordination Center
The number to call is: (216) 4143815
English speaking person's name is Ms. Yıldız Deveci. She has limited English but she says that they will help as best as they can.
Kadiköy Municipality provides residents with recycled carton bins to put paper, plastic, metal, and glass. They also collect cooking oil, old batteries, and old electronic equipment. All you have to do is call.
 
Basaksehir
Municipality
 
The department to speak to is Çevre Koruma Müdürlüğü (Environmental Protection Management)
Telephone: 444 0669 no need for 212 in the beginning you can call directly. The person to talk to is Serpil Palatçı.
They offer the same services as the other municipalities. However they do not pick up from the homes.
Instead of leaving the bags and recycle carton to the homes they give them to the management of the residences. The management distributes to the residents. The municipality upon request will leave a blue recyclable container just outside of the residence or village. They have pointed out that there are many containers already located outside of the residences. A truck will come once a week to pick up the recyclable goods. They can be paper, plastic, metal and glass.

Cooking Oil
Cooking oil can be picked up from your home, but it must be a minimum of 5 litres.

Used Electronic Goods
Old and broken electronics equipment will be picked up every Saturday. Just leave it next to the blue big container outside your residence.

Batteries
Old batteries can be picked up. You can call for a pick up. 

 
Eyup
Municipality

Department: Pick Up Distribution Center
Telephone number: 444 3000 no need for the 212 area code. They do not speak very advanced English, but they said that they will try their best to help.
Eyüp Municipality provides similar services as the other municipalities. They will provide recycle carton bins and bags. All you have to do is call them for pick up. One of the only differences is that they do not pick up used cooking oil.
Whatever used goods you want to donate they will take.
They also have a special line that you can call to give away all your used goods that work. It is called Şefkat Eli (a helping hand). Any household equipment, clothes, etc that you do not use they will come pick up and give to the needy. The number to call for this is (212) 616 5772.
 

 
Beyoglu
Municipality
As a resident of the Beyoğlu district you can call the municipality and ask for recycling carton bin and bags. The number to call is 444 0160. No need for the 212 area code. The staff has very limited English, but they will try to help as best as they can. Every week they have a pick up schedule divided into 4 neighborhoods:

  • Halıcıoglu neighborhood- Monday pick up.
  • Sütlüce neighborhood- Tuesday pick up.
  • Cihangir neighborhood- Wednesday pick up.
  • Peripaşa neighborhood- Thursday pick up.

Pick ups are done between 10:00am - 16:30pm. All you have to do is place the bag or carton bin in front of your building on the day of the pick up.

Cooking Oil
They do not pick up used cooking oil. They have out sourced that responsibility. You will need to call 0554 584 0942. Erhan Bey will be able to help you.

Used Electronic Goods
Beyoğlu Municipality does not pick up used and old electronic equipment. You will have to contact the Greater İstanbul Municipality.

Batteries
They also do not pick up used batteries. However you can drop them off at any pharmacy or school that is located in your neighborhood.
